Retro illustrations bring the reader to San Francisco and provide a tour of the city.

My thoughts
These picture book travel guides are fantastic and timeless classics. The book starts by showing San Francisco as a “cosmopolitan” city by the bay and shows San Francisco’s streets, tunnels, driving situations, hills, cable cars, historic sites, tourist destinations, museums, zoo, local stops, highlights, and so on. In fact, many of the locations remain the same today. It is good for nostalgia and also to introduce children to this wonderful city.

Curricular connections
These retro travel guides from the 60s are classics. Though these picture books are suggested for younger children, they can be used in curriculum (like geography and art) for older students.
5th grade Geography
Middle school Art (illustrations can provide inspiration for travel destination art projects)

Reading level/ Interest Age
Elementary and up.
